Week of January 25, 2010

Have your textbooks with you both days this time, so that you can review.

Monday/Tuesday:

In small groups, students will look for important quotes. Write them down, then decide what is important about them. Students should know the names of major characters, plots, and themes.

Old Testament/Koran
Arabian Nights
Agamemnon
Medea
Brave New World
Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and The Tempest
Sonnets and other Poems

Identify important themes like:
  • Free Will
  • Hubris / the Over-Reacher
  • Anti-Hero
  • Scapegoat
  • Vengeance v. Reconciliation
  • Justice
  • Guest-Host relationship
  • Respecting and paying homage to God or the gods
  • Burial rituals / Libations
  • Double-standards (based upon sexism or racism--found in Greeks, Shakespeare, and in "October Island.")
  • Role of imperialism
  • Fatal flaw
  • Tribal v. State law
  • Order v. Chaos
  • Parent/Child relationships
  • War
  • Exile
  • Death
  • Rebirth symbols--fire & water especially
  • Unreliable narrator
  • Courtly Love
  • Romantic Love
  • Sibling relationships
  • Married relationships
  • Reason v. Emotions
  • Rational v. Irrational
  • Friends
  • Loyalty
  • Honor
  • Hierarchies These are just a few things that come to mind. I will put more on this page as I think of more.
Wednesday:

Summarize what we have done. Is anyone up for a vocabulary review? Remember, your "classical roots" words at the ends of the units are off the table.
