Week of September 21, 2009

Monday/Tuesday

Sorry that everything is not yet going exactly as planned. I haven't quite hit my stride yet so my plans not be as precise as some of you would like. Rest assured, I'm doing the best I can.

Even Classes: I will finally get to do the brief Fahrenheit 451 presentation. Someone was kind enough to remind me about it on Friday. To that same person or someone else: please remind me on Tuesday! It's very short--but really illustrates what I consider important. Since I'm doing the grading, it's good for you to know too.

In class, we will finish "Agamemnon" today. You will receive notes (if you haven't already gone to the shared file). You have also already received copies of the three hand-outs: George Orwell's "Politics and the English Language," Kurt Vonnegut's two page article about writing well, and William Lutz's famous "With These Words I can Sell You Anything." Answer the first set of questions at the end of each article.

If you don't finish the articles, finish them for homework.

Remember that there is a quiz on Wednesday/Thursday. It will relate only to the Greek material. Remember to have your vocabulary books on Wednesday/Thursday. It counts for ten points of your class work/ class participation grade for the day. Also remember to have your World Lit Volumes I & II on Wednesday/Thursday.

Go ahead and put away the summer reading stuff. I have allowed to much time to lapse to give you an assessment that goes beyond the summer reading. Here is where I'm talking about not quite hitting my stride yet. Sorry.

Wednesday/Thursday

Reading quiz on the Greek material. We will go over it. If the timing is right, we will also discuss the three articles. I have a great slide-show on advertisements from about 1900 - the 1990s. We will talk about the different kinds of appeals and perhaps how they have changed.

We might get to the opening chapters of "The Arabian Nights." I haven't decided. We will either do that or some Persian or Arabic poetry.

We will also go over chapter two's vocabulary words. Remember, the exercises, except "Words in Context," are due every Friday. So that will be this night's homework.

Friday:
Check vocabulary and go over. Review what we have learned so far.
